I finally got around to trying Roon. As much as I appreciate the Roon appearance and extra info, to my ears the Audirvana sound quality is better. Anybody else prefer it over Roon for sound quality? I like the software that loads the songs into RAM and plays from there and not the hard drive. Does Roon do this? Roon works seamlessly, easily and consistently.

I couldn’t say the same for any of the other applications. There seemed to be no consistency. One day Audirvana sounded great. The next day Amarra or PureMusic sounded better. Roon sounds tremendous. I wasnt even aware of these differences I was just testing the two to decide which one to buy but it struck me right away like changing a good dac like Hugo TT with an stellar dac like Dave. So for sound quality alone on the same gear Audirvana is far superior to Roon or direct streaming from Tidal masters or hifi via Audirvana still sound better than directly from Tidal.

I got 12 out of We tired again at one my friends houses at out next meeting. I got 9 out of 20 that time. So, now I know I can’t reliably tell one from the other with the music played and the hardware used.

The strange thing is given a choice between a Windows player and my current Linux player Deadbeef on top of Puppy Linux I choose Deadbeef every time. I wonder of my dislike of Microsoft has anything to do with it. Absence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence. Without it, Apple Music will convert files to its configured output resolution. If you have a DAC that has poor upsampling – buy a new one. Using a music player that digitally filters music files prior to sending them to a DAC is useless.

Bit perfect music players have no ‘sound’. Linux Ubuntu 18 got a similar feature. Pulseaudio can now avoid resampling everything, but instead pass it through at its native sampling rate. Roon is by far the best audio management software I have used. The user experience in Roon is first rate. The rest don’t even come close.

I am not sure if this is entirely accurate, but I heard that the people who designed Roon actually got their start by designing the software which was bought by Meridian, and became the Sooloos system. I guess the point is, the software team had an early start and a large victory selling that to or designing it for Meridian. Whether you want to add a touch of EQ or you want to view your favorite songs through a spectrum analyzer, this can be handy for audiophiles.

That may not be a great name, and the interface is a little dated, but this app is fast, configurable, and perhaps most importantly, free. Once the component is installed, this becomes an even more powerful audio player.

Roon sounds tremendous. Sometimes I find myself preferring the SQ of Audirvana, but not consistently. For user experience and exploring music, Roon is streets ahead. The Roon look and interface makes Audirvana look like something from the 90’s wish Damien would get rid of that lame ‘galaxy’ background and make it plain blue like the preferences window.

I know nothing about Audirvana, but am now three-fourths the way through a month-long trial of Roon. I previously used LMS the Squeezebox management software to manage my music — I’d used that for about 15 years.

That’s great when you want continuous background music, such as now when I’m working from home. It is also nice the way it shows you artist bios and info about other musicians and people on an album, sometimes along with an extra photo or two, but that’s not worth a paid subscription to me. The negatives are that for a long time I have primarily selected my music via folder browsing — I’d see an artist’s name and say, «Yup, that’s the person I want to hear right now.

It’ll come up with lots of suggestions and its search function is great, but it is just not the same. If I don’t keep Roon, it’ll be because I’m too set in my ways. Based strictly on sound quality I saw no reason to continue with Roon. I dumped it and have never regretted the decision. Just started a trial with Audirvana. So far, I like the looks and the sound.

Not really impressed with usability like making playlists and «working» with the music. I’m not ready to pay Roon prices yet. Wish we had more options. Foobar still works but no way to control with my phone. Took about minutes to sync the library adding some 50 albums or so, mainly redbook, nothing happens until the sync has stopped. The recently added titles are under playlists, but they’re in alphabetical order, not from the filename date Played a few albums while doing some chores, all looked good.

Let the system stay idle for a few hours then played a redbook album, 5s of music then white noise from the speakers. Useless software, honestly. Imagine if the levels were straight to a power amp, blown tweeters to replace. It’s not as if it was a hardship to play a redbook album. Quit Audirvana, and played Roon without issue. If Roon falls over and this is very rare, the output is muted with file playback just stalling.

In this case, restart the Roon core and all good. Some operational ‘features’ with Roon are annoying, but not to the extent of how Audirvana can fall over. If Audirvana was as reliable as Roon, I would use it more often, but now I’m very tempted to remove Audirvana altogether. The user experience in Roon is first rate.

For the most part, they do sound the same, in my opinion. For example, there’s a track on a very well-recorded Celtic music album I’d have to find it again where there’s a certain tenor note that CLEARLY distorts when played through iTunes every time but is rendered perfectly via Audirvana. And, yes, I confirmed both programs were set for bit perfect i. I also hear clear differences between Foobar for example and Roon or Audirvana or Much more dynamic and musical.

When I am home, listening to my audio system, I use Roon to manage my library of digital music as well as to manage my Tidal HiFi subscription and play it through my doc, which is «Roon Ready» and allows for easy seamless integration. Roon is by far the best audio management software I have used.
